The Intrinsic value of “Alternative” Hardwoods

The mood of a space often begins with the materials. Tone, grain, and proportion all shape how an interior feels, both visually and emotionally.
While Oak and Walnut remain enduring choices, we felt there is value in exploring lesser often used species. At Ebony and Co, we refer to these as “alternative hardwoods”. Not because they are experimental or new, but because they are simply less common in today’s interiors.
Original species like Poplar, Elm, Maple, and the Ivory-white selection of Ash offer new creative possibilities. With their subtle character and natural elegance, they bring a different kind of presence, one that supports a space rather than dominating it.

Why alternative hardwoods?

Alternative hardwoods bring a quieter kind of beauty. They offer exciting different colour and grain patterns that easily take subtle and timeless finish tones, qualities that suit interiors seeking clarity and restraint.

Continental Poplar, Megève Natural Velvet Poly, wide planks in widths of 18-35 cm, and lengths of 150-350 cm.
Maple Clear Grade, Faded White Velvet Poly, planks in random widths of 22-28 cm and lengths of 120-350 cm.
All of them are European grown, locally sourced and from renewable sources, which adds a sense of thoughtfulness and reduced impact to the selection process. More than a trend, they reflect a shift in values: toward longevity, natural imperfection, and the kind of elegance that does not ask to be the center of attention, yet still defines the space.
Each of these species is available in wide long planks and can be finished to suit the mood and palette of the project.
Our Selection
Choosing the right wood goes beyond appearance. It’s about how a material feels in a space, how it ages, and how it supports the overall design. Our alternative hardwoods offer a more subtle expression, lighter tones and different grains that can create a different interior.
They’re not chosen to stand out, but to support thoughtful, well-balanced interiors. Each species is selected for its character and crafted in very wide and long planks showing off the best the wood to offer.

Poplar

Light, quiet and minimalistic. With its fine grain and soft cream undertones, Poplar is a subtle choice for serene interiors. It responds well to pale or tinted finishes, and sits gently within tonal palettes.

Fact: Dutch wooden shoes were always made of Poplar.

Elm

Rich yet understated. Elm has a long grain and warm honey tones that bring depth and it's very hard-wearing. Its natural variation adds personality, while retaining a sense of calm.

Fact: Stairwells in historic buildings in Paris are mostly made of Elm
as it’s tough and elegant.

Maple Select (Sycamore)

Smooth, light, even, and long-wearing. Maple offers a bright and subtle base that suits more modern minimalistic interiors. A quiet performer with lasting appeal.

Fact: Sycamore Maple is a beloved choice for yachts and fine furniture.

Ivory Ash Select

with a long grain, pale and still a warm undertone. Ivory Ash is the white part sawn from central European Ash. It can be bleached lighter, making it a popular choice for Nordic-inspired or coastal interiors.

Fact: Ash is so hard and tough, it’s the preferred choice for sports equipment and baseball bats.
